Epson FastFoto FF-680W

Around Christmas time, we purchased this Epson photo scanner from Best Buy. We have a ton of old family photos we’d like to capture and store digitally. There were three models, but we decided on the one mainly for photo printer, although it scans documents too. Watch the video to see all the useful features!

Cost

Speed

  • 300 dpi / 1 second per photo
  • 600 dpi / 3 seconds per photo
  • 1200 dpi / 10 seconds per photo
(Where “dpi” means dots per inch. More dots display better but makes a larger file.)

Ease of Use

  • Easy to use software that helps organize your photos by date / subject / location
  • Connect with USB to install, then you can use WiFi
  • Software is compatible with Windows and Apple operating systems
  • Load 30 pictures at a time, prompts before each batch for ease of naming
  • Saves as JPEG or TIFF format
  • Uploads to Google Docs and Dropbox

Quality

  • Works for 4×6, 5×7, 8×10, Panoramic, Post cards, and Polaroids
  • Two-sided scanning to copy the back of the photo to capture names / dates / places
  • Stores conveniently since loading tray and exit trays fold closed
  • Corrects for brightness, fading, and red-eye
If scanner jams, press grey button to open unit. Also how you would clean off rollers to prevent streaks.

Tips & Tricks

  • Make sure your computer has lots of storage space since the software is caching as it is processing your photos
  • Be sure to wipe off the rollers to remove any dust, this will eliminate streaks since the dust blocks the scanner; recommended after 300 photos
  • If the scanner jams, press the grey button to open to clear jam
  • Quickly scan documents (includes OCR) and receipts to eliminate paper clutter!
  • For fragile or damaged photos, use the clear scanning folder to protect when scanning
  • Photos and documents can be shared with Evernote
  • Check out the Android and IOS apps available
